Lyrical Movements: A Manipuri Dance-Theatre Show
& A Touch of Tagore Film Screening
Friday, 9th December, 7.30 – 9.30pm
An evening of Manipuri-style Tagore dance-theatre and film.
Led by classical dancer and choreographer, Bithika Raha Basu, this dance show celebrates Tagore, showcasing and exemplifying the Manipuri style of dance.
Manipuri dance is hardly ever showcased in the UK, so this event is a rare opportunity to experience this historic and beautiful form of classical Indian dance. One of the six classical dance styles of India, Manipuri is a religious and spiritual dance, indigenous to the northeastern state of Manipur. Modest and soft, it is said to be one of the most meaningful dances in the world.
The evening also features a screening of 'A Touch of Tagore', a short documentary film about the history and development of Tagore dance in the UK, by Nrityakala The Rhythm. www.nrityakala.org
Bithika Raha Basu founded the organization ‘Nrityakala-the Rhythm’ in 1986, with the philosophy of “learning through dance”.
Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali polymath who reshaped his region's literature and music. Author of Gitanjali, he was the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. His poetry is viewed by many as spiritual and magical, reaching out to people on both a personal and a political level.
